The Christmas season is here and many people are on breaks from work and school which make today a pretty easy one to dropkick. But for those of us still having to work…
Paul wrote to the church in Corinth and among the things he told them, he said this:
13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love.
Be watchful. This is really the heart behind #dropkickmonday. Pay attention to what you are doing. Pay attention to how you think, pay attention to how you interact with people. Be watchful over your time, your desires, your emotions, your motivations. Be watchful because Mondays can either set you up for a great week, or they can make things really tough. Be watchful.
Stand firm in the faith. Be grounded in what you believe. Be focused and unwavering. If you aren’t sure what you believe, then learn. Read your Bible, study, ask questions, do he leg work so that you can be firm in the faith. Paul is telling this to a church that had a lot of major issues in it. They were in a city surrounded by false gods and despicable acts happening all around them. And through all the chaos going on Paul tells this church to stand firm in what they believed in. Do not let the world around you shake you. Do not let Monday shake you. It’s just a day. It’s just work. It’s just school. You will get through it, you will be ok. Stand firm in the faith.
Act like men. Before I lose what female readership I have let’s take a closer look at this translation shall we? The verb is ἀνδρίζομαι. It means to show yourself as man or as brave. It’s a military term, and back then women were not allowed anywhere near the military and battle. To show up ready to fight, to be willing to go to war and defend yourself, to be brave enough to do those things was reserved for men. Ladies, this applies to you to. Be brave. Be tuff. Yes life is hard, yes it’s ugly out there, but you have a God who fights for you. You have the one who is in control looking out for you. It is much easier to be brave on the battlefield when you know the quality of soldier you are standing next to. It should be easy for us to get through the things life throws at us when we think about who is on our side. Be brave.
Be strong. Again it’s a military term. Be strong, do not allow yourself to be overwhelmed by the things of this world. If you are being watchful and intentional with your thoughts, and actions; if you are standing firm and unwavering in what you believe, if you are being brave and willing to take on the tough things in life, strength will arise. You will be made strong and be able to then be strong when needed. Be strong knowing that God is with you.
And let all that you do be done in love. As you tackle another Monday, as you get ready for a holiday with family and friends that might drive you nuts or frustrate you. You must be able engage them and relate with them through love. You can be as watchful and grounded and brave and strong as you want, but without love you have nothing.
#Dropkickmonday is in full swing. Don’t just get through the day, win the day.
