Closing Doors

“Lord I pray that you make it clear what is your will and you close any other doors.” Anyone else ever pray this prayer or something similar to it? I’ve prayed this often recently as I have been sending out resumes and doing interviews. It seems like a simple and good prayer to pray right? I want to be where God is and where he wants me, so I want him to make it very clear for me.

Here’s the thing about approaching a door you are about to walk through and then it closes… it hurts. Having a door slammed in your face isn’t a fun experience.

Even though it’s what I have prayed, even though I know God is in control, even though I wasn’t all that excited, or expected much, it still hurts to have door after door closed on you. I would not have done well going door to door selling vacuums.

So what are we to do? Do we stop walking up to doors? Do we sit back and hope that God does all the work and “poof” we are where he wants us to be? No. That’s not how it works. This is a perfect reminder that God always answers prayers. Even when his prayers are No, or Not right now, he always answers them. Even when, by answering those prayers our egos get a bit damaged, he reminds us, me, that he’s there, he’s paying attention and he’s in control.

Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

Abraham had no idea where he was going, but he went. He just kept walking, he kept searching, he kept moving. Even when it didn’t make sense, and I’m sure he passed through some spots that he wanted to stop and rest and live in, he kept walking until God told him to stop.

So if we are going to pray that God makes it clear to us, if we are going to ask him to move in our lives, we cannot be disappointed or sad or mad when he does. Instead we find joy that God listens and cares what our next job is, what school to go to, whether to continue dating a certain person. GOD LISTENS! HE PAYS ATTENTION! The same God who made everything, who holds everything in existence, he pays attention to you and me. That’s crazy and awesome, and refreshing, and comforting. God is good!

I can continue knocking and searching, because I have been reminded and shown, God is good and paying attention and has a plan.
